Mission Statement
Portraits of Hate, Lessons of Hope seeks to combat the forces of religious hatred through the careful study of intolerant imagery in United States history. While there are a host of sites, books, and periodicals dedicated to the promulgation of intolerance and hate via cartoons and photographs, there are few publicly accessible resources for disputing the messages promoted by such imagery. Our site is designed to fill this void. Through an in-depth analysis of an extensive archive of visualized intolerance, we aim to promote public awareness about the presence and prevalence of religious intolerance from both a historical and a modern-day framework. We recognize the power that intolerant imagery can have, and it is our sincere hope that Portraits of Hate, Lessons of Hope will serve as a force which counter-balances religious hatred. We strive to be a place of comfort for the oppressed, a tool for those fighting hatred and ignorance, a collection of resources for those wishing to educate others, and, hopefully, a persuasive voice for those who might misunderstand or dislike religious diversity. In that sense, our site addresses a wide audience of all mature age groups, religions, and ethnicities, though portions of our webpage are specifically focused on high school and college-aged students.
